The truly dedicated Star Wars fans know who Princess Leia is. They know her costumes,
they know her personality. Many even know how much her character and family have
continued to grow beyond what was seen in Return of the Jedi.
For casual Star Wars fans, however, Princess Leia can be any female character who
happens to be seen in the vicinity of a stormtrooper, Darth Vader, or anyone carrying
a lightsaber. I’ve been called “Princess Leia” while I was dressed as Mara Jade,
as a Jedi, and even while dressed as Aayla!
After years of laughing it off, I finally decided that if everyone was going to call
me Princess Leia, I may as well dress like her! I considered making the ceremonial
gown, since it is quite beautiful, but in the end I decided to go with her more iconic
look. I’d seen the senatorial dress and had taken photos of it during the Magic
of Myth exhibition at the Smithsonian in 1998, but back then I never would have dreamed
that one day I would be making the costume myself. If I had, I would have taken
a lot more pictures!
