I love cooking, baked goods, and all things yummy. While making your own food is a good way to eat healthier, some things are LOADED with calories!

I've been recently using applesauce as a substitute for oils and eggs and sugar in alot of my recipes. It takes some tinkering with, but the results can be much more yummier than the recipe started out!

There are many substitutes you can use to cut calories, and alot of them are considered vegan. Here are a few websites i have found that may be useful for those of you who enjoy baking as much as i do!

Basic Information on Applesauce substitutes: http://www.wisegeek.com/can-i-substitut ... baking.htm

Info on Egg replacements in recipes: http://www.wikihow.com/Replace-Eggs-in-Your-Cooking

A nice list of egg substitutes for brownies: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/egg-subs ... wnies.html

As a bonus, my FAVORITE recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Downeast-M ... etail.aspx
I use half the oil and less sugar, and add applesauce.

Feel free to contribute your own recipes and tips!!

This is my favorite 'minor cooking change that is a MAJOR cooking change' though since I'm allergic to apples (and pears, which btw if you can eat them and you make homemade fillings, swap about half your fruit with pears and reduce your added sugar by over half - the pears are so sweet you won't know the difference) I use mashed ripe bananas. Obviously this doesn't work so great in non-sweet baking, but it's AWESOME for desserts!

Good to know about the pears! They are my favorite fruit! I also want to try bananas in my baking. i saw that as a substitute as well and was intrigued!

When i made my brownies, i used a cinnamon applesauce and it came out really good! I wasn't too sure how the flavors would mix but it was a cheap batter so i didn't mind experimenting ;)
